About the Exhibition
The Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition, now in its 37th year, took place from the 16th – 19th October and was a great success.
Visitor numbers held steady from last year and the pleasant sunny weather allowed the outside attractions to be really enjoyed by all visitors.
Well over 1000 models were on display across the 40+ club and society stands and in the competition and display classes. Modellers were also able to stock up on supplies as nearly 50 specialist suppliers were at the exhibition. The free lectures on a wide range of topics by knowledgeable experts were well attended by visitors and there were also some interesting workshop demonstrations.
Inside the packed exhibition halls special displays marked the 80th Anniversary of the Flying Scotsman becoming the first steam locomotive to officially exceed 100mph and also the 120th Anniversary of the opening of the Manchester Ship Canal on the 1st January 1894.
Outside action included parades by the magnificent Fosseway Steamers, displays by the Gas Turbine Builders Association and the popular 5” gauge passenger carrying locomotive which was once again offering free rides to visitors.
This year’s winners of the prestigious Society Shield, awarded to the best club/society stand, were the Hereford Society of Model Engineers. In second place was the Bromsgrove Society of Model Engineers and in 3rd place the Melton Mowbray and District Model Engineering Society.
