About the Exhibition
The Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition, now in its 36th year, took place on 17th to 20th October and was a great success. Visitor numbers held steady from last year.
Well over 1000 models were on display across the 40+ club and society stands and in the competition and display classes. Modellers were also able to stock up on supplies as more than 50 specialist suppliers were at the exhibition.
The free lecture programme on a wide range of topics by knowledgeable experts was well attended by visitors and there were also some interesting workshop demonstrations.
Inside the packed exhibition halls a special display marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of Frank Hornby which included a fabulous 15 foot Meccano car, which is rarely seen in public, and a collection of Hornby trains, Dinky toys and Meccano models. Exciting live steam action from The Gauge One Model Railway Association, featuring scale model Mallards running against the clock, celebrated the 75th anniversary of Mallard breaking the speed locomotives record.
Other exhibits included marine models from a number of boat clubs, horse drawn models from the Guild of Model Wheelwrights and clocks courtesy of the BHI Milton Keynes Clock Club. Outside action included parades by the magnificent Fosseway Steamers, displays by the Gas Turbine Builders Association and the popular 5” gauge passenger carrying locomotive which was once again offering free rides to visitors.
This year’s winners of the prestigious Society Shield, awarded to the best club/society stand, were the Gas Turbine Builders Association with the Society of Model & Experimental Engineers (SMEE) taking second place and the Birmingham Society of Model Engineers in third place.
